About this book

In Paris in the 1920s, the American journalist Jake Barnes, wounded in the war, drifts from café to café with a group of expatriate friends and with Lady Brett Ashley, the woman he loves and cannot have. The group travels to Pamplona for the fiesta of San Fermín, with its running of the bulls, and among the drinking and jealousy a young bullfighter becomes the centre of everyone's attention.

Context and significance

Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961) published the novel in 1926, and its spare, understated style and its portrait of the 'lost generation' made him famous. He later won the Nobel Prize in 1954. The book entered the public domain in the United States in 2022.
