About this book

Three friends, the narrator J., George and Harris, decide they are suffering from overwork and need a rest. Rejecting a sea voyage, they take a boat up the River Thames from Kingston towards Oxford, together with Montmorency, a fox terrier with a talent for trouble. The trip is a chain of small disasters: a tin of pineapple and no tin-opener, a tow line that tangles itself, an ambitious Irish stew, and memories of Harris getting lost in the maze at Hampton Court.

Context and significance

Jerome K. Jerome (1859–1927) set out to write a serious guide to the Thames, with notes on its history, and some of those passages remain, but the comedy took over. Published in 1889, the book has never been out of print and is still one of the funniest in English; the narrator's opening discovery, from a medical dictionary, that he has every disease except housemaid's knee is famous.
