About this book

Pamela Andrews, a pretty, pious fifteen-year-old maidservant, is left without protection when her kind mistress dies, and the lady's son, the young squire Mr B., begins to pursue her. In letters to her poor, honest parents, and later in a journal, she records his attempts to seduce her, from hiding in her closet to offering money, and finally his kidnapping of her to his country house in Lincolnshire, where she is guarded by a monstrous housekeeper. Pamela resists every attempt, until Mr B., reading her journal, is moved to change.

Context and significance

Samuel Richardson (1689–1761), a London printer, published this novel in letters in 1740; it was a sensation and one of the first great English novels, and its message that virtue is rewarded by marriage to the master provoked Henry Fielding's parodies Shamela and Joseph Andrews. Read Fielding's Tom Jones.
