About this book

Arsène Lupin, the gentleman-burglar, is elegant, witty and a master of disguise; he steals only from the rich, never kills, and enjoys making fools of the police. These nine stories begin with his arrest on board a transatlantic liner and go on to show him robbing a castle while sitting in a Paris prison, escaping from his own trial, stealing a queen's necklace as a boy, and finally meeting the great English detective Sherlock Holmes, who arrives too late.

Context and significance

Maurice Leblanc (1864–1941) created Lupin in 1905 for the magazine Je sais tout, as a French answer to Conan Doyle; after Doyle objected, later editions renamed the detective 'Herlock Sholmes'. Lupin is still popular, most recently through a successful television series. Compare the English gentleman-thief of The Amateur Cracksman and the original of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
