About this book

West of Arkham, in the hills of Massachusetts, a surveyor sent to plan a new reservoir finds a stretch of grey, dead land that the locals call the 'blasted heath'. An old man tells him what happened there in 1882: a meteorite fell on the farm of Nahum Gardner, bringing with it a colour unlike any on Earth. Over the following months the crops grow large but taste bitter, the animals change, the trees glow at night, and the family, one by one, fall into madness and decay.

Context and significance

H. P. Lovecraft wrote the story in 1927 and considered it his best; it appeared that year in the magazine Amazing Stories. Its horror is not a monster but something truly alien that cannot be understood, and many readers have seen in it a fable about poisoning and radiation. For more in the same vein, read The Call of Cthulhu.
