About this book

On his twenty-first birthday a young man named Anodos wakes to find his bedroom turning into a forest, and wanders into Fairy Land, a dreamlike world of talking trees, tiny fairies, a palace with a magical library and a marble lady whom he wakes with a song. He is followed everywhere by a dark shadow that withers whatever it touches, and his journey becomes a search for ideal beauty and, at last, the discovery of selfless love.

Context and significance

George MacDonald published the novel in 1858, and C. S. Lewis said that reading it as a young man 'baptised' his imagination. Read MacDonald's The Princess and the Goblin and Lilith.
