About this book

In Alexandria in the early fifth century, a city of philosophers, monks, Jews, Goths and Roman officials, the beautiful pagan philosopher Hypatia lectures on Plato to admiring students, while the fierce Christian patriarch Cyril and his monks grow ever more powerful. Philammon, a young monk come down from the desert monasteries, falls under Hypatia's spell and is caught between the two worlds, as the conflict in the city moves towards her murder by a Christian mob in 415.

Context and significance

Charles Kingsley published the novel in 1853, and its subtitle, 'New Foes with an Old Face', shows that he meant it as a warning about religious fanaticism in his own time. Hypatia, a real mathematician and philosopher, has become a symbol of reason and of learning destroyed by intolerance. Read Kingsley's The Water-Babies.
