About this book

These fourteen stories, published in 1927, show Ernest Hemingway at the height of his powers as a writer of short fiction. In 'The Killers', two gangsters wait in a small-town diner for a Swedish boxer they have been hired to kill, while young Nick Adams tries to warn him; in 'Hills Like White Elephants', an American and a young woman wait for a train in Spain, talking around an operation neither of them names; 'The Undefeated' follows an aging bullfighter who refuses to give up; and 'In Another Country' is set among wounded soldiers in a Milan hospital.

Context and significance

Hemingway believed that a story's strength lies in what it leaves out, like an iceberg with most of its mass beneath the water, and these stories, with their spare dialogue, influenced writers everywhere. His novels The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms are also in the library.
