About this book

In a rough gold-mining camp in the California Sierra, the only woman, Cherokee Sal, dies giving birth to a baby boy, and the hundred hard-drinking, quarrelsome miners decide to raise the child themselves. They name him Thomas Luck and slowly transform their camp and themselves to make it fit for him. In 'The Outcasts of Poker Flat', a gambler, two disreputable women and a drunkard expelled from a mining town are trapped by a snowstorm in the mountains with an innocent young couple. The volume gathers these and many other tales, legends and parodies.

Context and significance

Bret Harte (1836–1902) published 'The Luck of Roaring Camp' in 1868 in the Overland Monthly, which he edited in San Francisco, and it made him one of the most famous writers in America, the creator of the colourful, sentimental Western tale. He was an early friend and later a rival of Mark Twain. Compare Twain's Roughing It.
