About this book

Stephen Gordon, the only child of a wealthy English family, is given a boy's name by her father, who longed for a son, and grows up feeling different from other girls, loving riding, fencing and books. As a young woman she falls in love with women, is rejected by her mother and driven from her home, becomes a successful novelist, serves as an ambulance driver in the First World War and, in Paris, loves a young Welsh woman, Mary, while longing for a world that will accept people like her.

Context and significance

Radclyffe Hall (1880–1943) published the novel in 1928 as a plea for tolerance, and although it contains nothing explicit, it was tried for obscenity in London and banned in Britain for twenty years. It entered the public domain in the United States in 2024. Compare Virginia Woolf's Night and Day.
