About this book

In his second collection of stories, F. Scott Fitzgerald captures the restless, glittering world of young Americans after the First World War. It includes 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button', about a man who is born old and grows younger every year; 'The Diamond as Big as the Ritz', a fantasy about a family that owns a mountain made of a single diamond; and 'May Day', a darker story of drunken soldiers and rich young people in New York.

Context and significance

Fitzgerald published the collection in 1922, the same year as The Beautiful and Damned, and its title gave a name to the era; Benjamin Button was filmed in 2008. Read The Great Gatsby.

About the author

F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940) was born in St Paul, Minnesota, left Princeton for the army and became famous at twenty-three with his first novel, This Side of Paradise. He married the brilliant Zelda Sayre, named the Jazz Age and lived its glamour in New York and on the French Riviera.

The Great Gatsby (1925), now considered one of the greatest American novels, sold poorly in his lifetime. Zelda's illness, debts and drink darkened his later years, and he died in Hollywood at forty-four, writing film scripts and believing himself a failure.
