About this book

Peter Kropotkin, born a prince in 1842 and a page at the court of Tsar Alexander II, tells how he became an anarchist: his childhood on a great estate worked by serfs, his years as an army officer exploring Siberia and Manchuria, his work as a geographer, his turn to revolutionary politics, his imprisonment in the Peter and Paul Fortress in St Petersburg and his daring escape in 1876, and his long exile in Switzerland, France and England.

Context and significance

Kropotkin first published the memoirs in English in 1899, and they are among the great autobiographies of the nineteenth century. This is the edition of 1906. Read his Mutual Aid and The Conquest of Bread.
