About this book

Before Jeeves and Blandings Castle, P. G. Wodehouse wrote romantic and comic stories for magazines, and this collection gathers nineteen of them. In the title story, a young woman composer in a London flat is driven mad by the noise of the painter upstairs; there are stories of shy young men and resourceful girls, golf, boxing, schoolboys, struggling artists and actors, and a clever butler who manipulates the romance of the family he serves, all told with the light, inventive humour that made Wodehouse famous.

Context and significance

Wodehouse (1881–1975) published the collection in 1914. It shows him finding the style and the comic characters he later perfected. For his best-loved creation, the valet who rescues his master from every scrape, read My Man Jeeves.
