About this book

During the American Civil War, a Southern planter named Peyton Farquhar stands on a railway bridge in Alabama with a rope around his neck, about to be hanged by Union soldiers for trying to sabotage the line. The rope breaks, he falls into the river, and the story follows his desperate escape through the water and the forest toward his wife and home.

Context and significance

Ambrose Bierce (1842–c. 1914) fought in some of the bloodiest battles of the war and wrote about it without illusion. Published in 1890, this short story is famous for its ending, which has influenced films and writers ever since; read it without spoilers. Bierce, author of the satirical Devil's Dictionary, disappeared in Mexico during its revolution and was never found. Compare The Red Badge of Courage.
