About this book

In the pretty English village of Riseholme, Mrs Emmeline Lucas, known as Lucia, reigns over local society, organising musical evenings and Elizabethan revels, sprinkling her talk with Italian phrases she barely understands and playing the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata to her admiring friends. Her loyal courtier is Georgie Pillson, a fussy, gossipy bachelor who does embroidery. When a famous opera singer and an Indian guru arrive in the village, Lucia's throne is threatened.

Context and significance

E. F. Benson (1867–1940) published the novel in 1920, the first of his Mapp and Lucia books, gentle, malicious comedies of snobbery and one-upmanship that have kept a devoted following ever since. Compare Gaskell's Cranford.
