About this book

Paul Bäumer and his classmates are persuaded by their patriotic schoolmaster to volunteer for the German army in the First World War. At the front in France, under shelling, gas attacks and hunger, their youth and their illusions are destroyed, and the only things that matter are survival and comradeship, above all with the resourceful older soldier Katczinsky. When Paul goes home on leave, he finds he can no longer talk to anyone who has not been there.

Context and significance

Erich Maria Remarque (1898–1970), who was wounded in the war, published the novel in 1929, and it sold millions of copies within months. The Nazis burned it and later stripped him of his German citizenship. This is A. W. Wheen's English translation of the same year. Compare Wilfred Owen's Poems and Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms.
