About this book

Frederic Henry, a young American serving as an ambulance officer in the Italian army in the First World War, falls in love with Catherine Barkley, an English nurse, while recovering from a wound in a hospital in Milan. Back at the front, he is caught up in the chaotic retreat from Caporetto, where military police are shooting officers, and he deserts, makes his 'separate peace' and escapes with Catherine across the lake into Switzerland.

Context and significance

Ernest Hemingway, who had himself been wounded as an ambulance volunteer in Italy in 1918 and fallen in love with a nurse, published the novel in 1929, and its spare style and tragic ending made it his first great best-seller. Read The Sun Also Rises, and compare All Quiet on the Western Front.
