About this book

'The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line.' In fourteen essays, W. E. B. Du Bois describes the life of Black Americans after the end of slavery: the hopes and failures of Reconstruction, the poverty of the rural South, the place of education, the music of the spirituals, and the 'double consciousness' of always seeing oneself through the eyes of others. One chapter, on the death of his infant son, is unbearably moving.

Context and significance

Du Bois (1868–1963) was the first Black American to earn a doctorate from Harvard and a founder of the NAACP. Published in 1903, the book openly challenged the cautious approach of Booker T. Washington, whose Up from Slavery is also in the library. It remains a classic of American thought and of the literature of human dignity.
