About this book

In the small town of Winesburg, Ohio, around 1900, young George Willard, a reporter on the local newspaper, listens as one lonely townsperson after another confides in him. Each of these 'grotesques', as an old writer in the opening piece calls them, has seized on a single truth and been twisted by it: a former teacher whose hands frighten him, a doctor who writes thoughts on scraps of paper, a minister who watches a woman through a church window, a woman who runs naked into the rain. In the end George leaves to begin his own life.

Context and significance

Sherwood Anderson (1876–1941), who had walked away from a business career to write, published this cycle of linked stories in 1919. Its plain style and its sympathy for inner lives that never find words influenced Hemingway, Faulkner and Steinbeck. Compare the small-town voices of Spoon River Anthology.
