About this book

This is the English version of the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam, made by George Sale and first published in 1734: all one hundred and fourteen suras, rendered from the Arabic with notes drawn largely from the classical commentators such as al-Baydawi and the two Jalals, and a long 'Preliminary Discourse' in which Sale describes pre-Islamic Arabia, the life of the Prophet and the beliefs and practices of Muslims. For Muslims, any translation is an interpretation of the meanings of the Qur'an, not the Qur'an itself.

Context and significance

Sale (about 1697–1736), an English lawyer and orientalist who learned Arabic in London, produced the standard English version for nearly two centuries; it was read by Voltaire and Gibbon, and Thomas Jefferson's copy was used in 2007 when the first Muslim member of the United States Congress took his oath. Compare T. W. Arnold's The Preaching of Islam.
