About this book

Born in India in 1893, Mukunda Lal Ghosh tells how, as a boy, he longed for God, ran away towards the Himalayas, and at last found his master, Sri Yukteswar, who trained him in the discipline of Kriya Yoga and gave him the monastic name Yogananda. He describes the saints and holy people he met, many of the wonders attributed to them, his meetings with Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi, and his mission to the West, where he arrived in 1920 and founded a society to teach meditation.

Context and significance

Paramahansa Yogananda (1893–1952) published the book in 1946, and it became one of the most popular spiritual autobiographies of the twentieth century; Steve Jobs is said to have reread it every year. Readers may take its miracles as faith or as legend. Tagore's own spiritual thought is in Sadhana and Gitanjali.
