About this book

At the glittering court of the French king Henry II in 1558, Mademoiselle de Chartres, a young heiress of perfect beauty and virtue, marries the Prince of Cleves, whom she respects but does not love. Then she falls passionately in love with the charming Duke of Nemours, who loves her in return. Determined to remain faithful, she makes a confession to her husband that no wife in fiction had made before, with tragic consequences.

Context and significance

Madame de La Fayette (1634–1693) published the novel anonymously in 1678, and it is often called the first modern novel in French, the first great novel of psychological analysis. Compare Manon Lescaut and Racine's Phaedra.
