About this book

The Chevalier des Grieux, a promising seventeen-year-old student from a noble family, meets the beautiful young Manon Lescaut at an inn in Amiens as she is being sent to a convent, and elopes with her to Paris the same day. Manon loves him, but she loves pleasure and money even more, and again and again she leaves him for richer men, while he, unable to give her up, sinks into cheating at cards, prison and disgrace, until she is deported to the French colony of Louisiana and he follows her.

Context and significance

Antoine François Prévost (1697–1763), known as the abbé Prévost, a former monk and adventurer, published the story in 1731 as part of a longer novel, and it was seized in Paris as immoral. It became one of the most famous love stories in French literature and inspired operas by Massenet and Puccini. Compare Camille by Dumas fils.
