About this book

In twenty essays, G. K. Chesterton takes on the famous writers and thinkers of his day, Rudyard Kipling, Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells and others, arguing that each of them, for all their brilliance, lacks a coherent view of the world, and he includes an essay on the fashionable cult of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. With his usual paradoxes he defends the ordinary man, the family and dogma itself: the real danger, he says, is not people with fixed beliefs but people with none.

Context and significance

Chesterton published the book in 1905, and when critics complained that he had attacked others without stating his own philosophy, he replied with Orthodoxy. It pairs well with The Everlasting Man.
