About this book

In the Scottish Lowlands at the end of the seventeenth century, Edgar Ravenswood, the proud, impoverished heir of an ancient family, lives in his ruined tower of Wolf's Crag, hating Sir William Ashton, the lawyer who acquired his family's lands. But when he saves Ashton and his gentle daughter Lucy from a wild bull, Edgar and Lucy fall in love and secretly pledge themselves to each other. Lucy's ambitious, domineering mother has other plans, and an old prophecy hangs over the house of Ravenswood.

Context and significance

Sir Walter Scott published the tragic novel in 1819, basing it on a real case of 1669, and wrote much of it while seriously ill, dictating to secretaries. Donizetti made it into the opera Lucia di Lammermoor, famous for its mad scene. Read Scott's Waverley and Ivanhoe.
