About this book

In a village near Antwerp, Nello, a poor orphan boy, lives with his old grandfather and Patrasche, a big Flemish working dog that they rescued when it was beaten and left to die by a cruel master. Every day the boy and the dog pull a cart of milk cans to the city. Nello dreams of becoming a painter and of seeing the great paintings by Rubens in Antwerp Cathedral, but poverty, injustice and a hard winter bring the story to a heartbreaking end on Christmas Eve.

Context and significance

Ouida, the pen name of the English novelist Maria Louise Ramé (1839–1908), published the story in 1872. It has been filmed many times and is especially loved in Japan, where an animated series made it famous. Compare Anna Sewell's Black Beauty.
