About this book

In 1468, Quentin Durward, a penniless young Scot, arrives in France to seek his fortune and joins the Scottish Archers, the bodyguard of the cunning King Louis XI. The king, who prefers spies and intrigue to battles, sends him to escort the young Countess Isabelle de Croye, who has fled the Duke of Burgundy, through dangerous country to the protection of the Bishop of Liège, on a journey the king himself has secretly arranged to end in an ambush.

Context and significance

Published in 1823, Quentin Durward was Sir Walter Scott's first novel with a setting on the Continent, and it made him even more popular in France than at home. Its portrait of Louis XI, superstitious, miserly and brilliant, is one of his finest. Read also Ivanhoe and The Talisman.
