About this book

A poor old woodcarver named Geppetto carves a puppet from a piece of wood that can already talk and cry, and the puppet, Pinocchio, runs away almost as soon as he has legs. He is cheated by the Fox and the Cat, hanged from a tree, lured to a land where boys never study and turned into a donkey, and swallowed by an enormous shark, while his nose grows each time he tells a lie.

Context and significance

Carlo Collodi was the pen name of Carlo Lorenzini (1826–1890), a Florentine journalist who took his name from his mother's village. Serialised from 1881 to 1883, the story is much darker and stranger than the Disney film, and it is one of the most translated books in the world. Read it with Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
