About this book

Doctor John Dolittle of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh loves animals so much that his house fills up with them and his human patients stop coming. Then his parrot, Polynesia, teaches him the language of animals, and he becomes the most famous animal doctor in the world. When the monkeys of Africa fall sick in a terrible epidemic, he sails off to cure them with his household, Dab-Dab the duck, Jip the dog, Gub-Gub the pig, Chee-Chee the monkey and Too-Too the owl, and meets the rare two-headed pushmi-pullyu.

Context and significance

Hugh Lofting (1886–1947) invented the doctor in illustrated letters to his children while serving as a soldier in the First World War, and published the book in 1920. Its picture of an African kingdom contains racist caricatures that later editions removed. Compare The Jungle Book.
