About this book

In the village of Hayslope at the end of the eighteenth century, Adam Bede is a strong and honest carpenter who loves Hetty Sorrel, a pretty, vain dairymaid on the Poyser family's farm. Hetty, dazzled by the attentions of the young squire, Captain Arthur Donnithorne, dreams of becoming a lady. Their secret affair has consequences that drive Hetty to a desperate act and a prison cell, where the young Methodist preacher Dinah Morris comes to comfort her.

Context and significance

Published in 1859, this was the first full-length novel by George Eliot, the pen name of Mary Ann Evans (1819–1880), and it was an immediate success; readers argued over who the mysterious author could be. Its warm, detailed picture of country life and its sympathy for flawed people prepared the way for Middlemarch. For more in the same vein, read Silas Marner.
