About this book

Before the gods were, there were Fate and Chance, and one of them set MANA-YOOD-SUSHAI, the greatest of the gods, to sleep; when he wakes, the worlds will end. Meanwhile Skarl the drummer beats his drum without ceasing to keep him asleep, and the lesser gods play with the worlds. In short prose poems, Lord Dunsany invents a complete mythology of gods, prophets and doomed worlds, written in a grave, biblical style.

Context and significance

Dunsany published this, his first book, in 1905 at his own expense, with drawings by Sidney Sime, and it was a great influence on H. P. Lovecraft and later fantasy writers. Read his The King of Elfland's Daughter.
