About this book

In 1918 a manuscript sealed in a thermos flask is found floating off the coast of Greenland. It is the story of Bowen Tyler, an American whose ship is sunk by a German submarine during the First World War. With a young woman, Lys La Rue, and a few British sailors, he captures the submarine, but sabotage leaves them lost at sea until they reach an unknown island surrounded by cliffs, Caprona, where dinosaurs still live and primitive human tribes seem to represent every stage of evolution.

Context and significance

Edgar Rice Burroughs, the creator of Tarzan, published the story in 1918; it is the first part of a trilogy about the island of Caspak. It belongs to the 'lost world' tradition of adventure. Compare Conan Doyle's The Lost World and Burroughs's own A Princess of Mars.
