About this book

Twenty of Shakespeare's plays are retold here as stories in simple, graceful prose for young readers, from The Tempest, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Twelfth Night to King Lear, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Othello. The authors keep as much of Shakespeare's own language as they can, so that children can meet his characters and stories before they read the plays themselves.

Context and significance

Charles Lamb wrote the tragedies and his sister Mary Lamb the comedies, though only Charles's name appeared on the title page of the first edition in 1807. Mary had killed their mother in a fit of madness in 1796, and Charles cared for her for the rest of his life. The book has never been out of print. Read Shakespeare's Hamlet, King Lear and The Tempest.
