About this book

'Of Truth', 'Of Death', 'Of Revenge', 'Of Friendship', 'Of Studies': in some sixty short essays, Francis Bacon gives practical, worldly advice on how to live and how to succeed in public life, in sentences so compact that many have become proverbs. 'Revenge is a kind of wild justice'; 'Men fear death, as children fear to go in the dark'; 'Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.'

Context and significance

Bacon (1561–1626), lawyer, philosopher and Lord Chancellor of England until his fall for accepting bribes, published the first ten essays in 1597, borrowing the name from Montaigne's French Essais, and enlarged the collection to fifty-eight in 1625. They are among the first great essays written in English. Then turn to his New Atlantis, and compare Machiavelli's The Prince.
