About this book

Snorri Sturluson's history of the kings of Norway begins with the legendary Ynglings, descended from the god Odin, and continues through Harald Fairhair, who united Norway; Olaf Tryggvason and Saint Olaf, who brought Christianity; Harald Hardrada, who died invading England in 1066; and the kings of the twelfth century. Full of battles, voyages, feuds and vivid characters, it is both a history and a gallery of sagas.

Context and significance

Snorri wrote the work around 1230, and its name comes from its opening words, 'kringla heimsins', 'the circle of the world'. It became a foundation of Norway's national identity. Read Snorri's Younger Edda and The Story of Burnt Njal.
