About this book

Two young women leave Miss Pinkerton's academy on the same day: gentle, wealthy Amelia Sedley and her friend Becky Sharp, a penniless orphan with green eyes, a sharp wit and no intention of staying poor. While the armies gather for the Battle of Waterloo, Becky climbs through English society by charm and lies, and Amelia clings to her love for a vain young officer.

Context and significance

William Makepeace Thackeray (1811–1863), born in Calcutta, published the novel in monthly parts in 1847 and 1848 with his own illustrations, and called it 'a novel without a hero'. The title comes from the fair of worldly vanities in Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. Becky Sharp is one of the most delightful bad heroines in fiction.
