About this book

Ambrosio, the abbot of a Capuchin monastery in Madrid, is admired by the whole city for his eloquence and his strict virtue. But pride has made him blind to his own weakness, and when a young novice reveals that she is a woman named Matilda who has entered the monastery for love of him, his fall begins, leading him step by step into deception, violence and finally a bargain with the powers of hell.

Context and significance

Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775–1818) wrote the novel at nineteen while working at the British embassy in The Hague, and its publication in 1796 caused a scandal that earned him the nickname Monk Lewis. One of the most extreme Gothic novels, it is written for adult readers. Compare it with the gentler terrors of The Mysteries of Udolpho.
