About this book

In twelve linked narrative poems, Alfred Tennyson retells the legend of King Arthur from his coming to his passing: the founding of the Round Table at Camelot, the love of Lancelot and Queen Guinevere, the enchantress Vivien who traps Merlin, the quest for the Holy Grail, the stories of Gareth and Lynette, Geraint and Enid, and Lancelot and Elaine, and the last battle in the west, as the order Arthur built collapses through betrayal.

Context and significance

Tennyson (1809–1892), Poet Laureate for more than forty years, published the Idylls between 1859 and 1885, drawing chiefly on Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur. Victorian readers saw in Arthur an ideal of duty and in the fall of Camelot a warning about their own society. Compare the medieval Canterbury Tales.
