About this book

John Bunyan tells the story of his spiritual struggles: his youth as a swearing village tinker who loved bell-ringing, dancing and games on the green; his conversion; and then years of terrible doubt and despair, in which he heard voices tempting him to 'sell Christ' and believed himself damned, until at last he found peace in God's grace. He ends with his calling as a preacher and his imprisonment for preaching without a licence.

Context and significance

Bunyan published the book in 1666, while in Bedford jail, twelve years before The Pilgrim's Progress, and it is one of the great spiritual autobiographies in English. This edition has illustrations by Harold Copping.
