About this book

Young Robin, eighteen years old, kills one of the king's foresters in a quarrel and becomes an outlaw in Sherwood Forest, where he gathers a merry band of yeomen. Pyle tells their adventures in a series of lively episodes: Robin's fight with Little John on a narrow bridge, his meeting with the jolly Friar Tuck, the wedding of Allan a Dale, the Sheriff of Nottingham's archery contest with its golden arrow, Robin's many disguises, and his meeting with King Richard, before the sad story of his death.

Context and significance

Howard Pyle (1853–1911), an American illustrator, wrote the book in 1883 in an old-fashioned English style and illustrated it himself, and it has shaped the image of Robin Hood ever since. It is a delightful book to read aloud. Robin also appears in Walter Scott's Ivanhoe.
