About this book

'All Gaul is divided into three parts.' In these clear, rapid commentaries, written in the third person, Julius Caesar tells the story of his conquest of Gaul between 58 and 50 BC: his campaigns against the Helvetii and the Germans, his bridge across the Rhine, his two expeditions to Britain, and finally the great revolt led by Vercingetorix, which ended with the siege of Alesia. The volume also contains the commentaries on the civil war that followed, in which Caesar fought Pompey for control of Rome.

Context and significance

Caesar (100–44 BC) wrote the commentaries both as a record of his deeds and as political propaganda for readers in Rome, and their plain, elegant Latin made them the first book read by generations of students. This translation is by W. A. McDevitte. Compare Xenophon's Anabasis and Tacitus.
