About this book

Thirteen years after the events of Noli Me Tangere, a rich jeweller named Simoun, with long white hair and dark blue spectacles, has become the trusted adviser of the Spanish Governor-General in the Philippines. In secret he is Crisóstomo Ibarra, the hero of the first novel, and he encourages greed and abuse in the government so that the people will be driven to revolution. Meanwhile a group of students campaigns for an academy to teach Spanish, and Simoun prepares a terrible plan for a wedding feast.

Context and significance

José Rizal published this darker sequel, El Filibusterismo, in Ghent in 1891, dedicating it to three Filipino priests executed by the Spanish in 1872. It debates whether a colonised people should seek freedom by reform or by violence. This translation is by Charles Derbyshire. The first novel is The Social Cancer.
