About this book

Pindar's odes celebrate the winners of the great athletic games of ancient Greece, at Olympia, Delphi, Nemea and the Isthmus of Corinth: runners, wrestlers, boxers and the owners of chariot teams, many of them kings and nobles of Sicily and the Greek cities. Into each victory song he weaves myths of gods and heroes and reflections on fate, fame and the fleeting glory of human life, which he calls, in one famous line, the dream of a shadow.

Context and significance

Pindar (about 518–438 BC), born near Thebes, was considered by the ancients the greatest of the Greek lyric poets, and his complex style inspired the 'Pindaric ode' of later European poetry. This translation is by Ernest Myers. Compare Homer's Iliad.
