About this book

Eight-year-old Princess Irene lives in a lonely house on a mountainside, beneath which dwell the goblins, misshapen creatures who were once human and now hate everyone above ground. Exploring the house, Irene finds a hidden staircase and at the top her mysterious great-great-grandmother, who spins an almost invisible thread to guide her. With the help of Curdie, a brave young miner who sings rhymes to drive the goblins away, she uncovers the goblins' plot to kidnap her.

Context and significance

Published in 1872, George MacDonald's fairy tale is one of the founding works of modern fantasy; G. K. Chesterton said it made a difference to his whole existence, and Tolkien's goblins owe much to it. The story continues in The Princess and Curdie. Read also At the Back of the North Wind.
