Sara Crewe is brought from India to Miss Minchin's school in London by her adoring father and treated as its star pupil, with her own sitting room and a famous doll. On her eleventh birthday the news comes that he has died, ruined, and Miss Minchin turns her into a ragged servant who sleeps in the attic. Sara survives by imagination, pretending to be a princess so that she must behave like one and sharing what little she has, until a mysterious neighbour across the rooftops begins to change her fortunes.
Frances Hodgson Burnett expanded the story from an earlier short version and a play into this novel of 1905, six years before The Secret Garden. Karen Savage reads it alone, in under six hours.
