Über das Buch

Sir Robert Chiltern is a respected politician with a brilliant future and a wife who believes him perfect. Then the clever, unscrupulous Mrs Cheveley arrives in London with a letter proving that he made his fortune by selling a state secret, advance news of the government's plan to buy shares in the Suez Canal, and threatens to ruin him unless he supports a fraudulent scheme. His friend Lord Goring, an idle dandy who turns out to be the wisest man in the play, must save him.

Hintergrund und Bedeutung

Oscar Wilde's comedy opened in London in January 1895, a few weeks before The Importance of Being Earnest, also in this library. This is a dramatic reading by fifteen LibriVox volunteers, about three and a quarter hours.
