Abbott begins long before Cleopatra's birth, with the Ptolemies who ruled Egypt after Alexander and the city of Alexandria with its lighthouse and library, so that by the time the young queen appears the stage is set. He then follows her quarrel with her brother, the night she is smuggled in to Julius Caesar, her time in Rome, her alliance and love affair with Mark Antony, the battle of Actium and the end at Alexandria, explaining Roman and Egyptian politics in plain terms for young readers.
