À propos du livre

Raskolnikov, a desperately poor former student in St Petersburg, persuades himself that an extraordinary man has the right to step over moral law, and murders an old pawnbroker with an axe. The novel follows not the crime but its aftermath: fever, guilt and fear, a duel of wits with the shrewd investigator Porfiry Petrovich, and his growing bond with Sonya, a young woman forced into poverty and shame, whose faith leads him at last to confess.

Contexte et portée

Dostoevsky published the novel in 1866, and it remains one of the most gripping studies of conscience ever written; The Brothers Karamazov is also in this library. This is Constance Garnett's translation, read by fourteen LibriVox volunteers in about twenty-three and a half hours.
