A visitor to a snowbound New England village pieces together the story of Ethan Frome, a crippled, silent farmer. Years before, trapped on a failing farm with his complaining, sickly wife Zeena, Ethan came to love her young cousin Mattie Silver, who had come to help in the house. When Zeena decides to send Mattie away, the two make a desperate choice on a sledding hill, with consequences that the story's last pages reveal.
Context and significance
Edith Wharton published the short novel in 1911, a stark contrast to her New York society novels such as The Age of Innocence, also in this library. Elizabeth Klett reads it alone, in about three hours.
