Catherine Morland, seventeen and an eager reader of Gothic novels full of haunted castles, spends a season in Bath, where she makes friends with the flirtatious Isabella Thorpe and falls for the witty young clergyman Henry Tilney. Invited to the Tilney family home, an old abbey, she lets her imagination run away with her and suspects General Tilney of a terrible crime, only to discover that the real dangers of life are of a more ordinary kind.
Context and significance
Jane Austen wrote the novel early, as a playful satire of the Gothic fashion, and it was published only after her death in 1817. Eighteen LibriVox volunteers read it in about eight hours.
